The Center of Innovation has been at the forefront of leading collaborative efforts with many business and research partners to strengthen Georgia’s energy and sustainability ecosystem. As a result, Georgia is now among the leading states in biomass exports, solar energy generation, and electric mobility with continuing efforts in sustainability, controlled environmental agriculture, and storage by localizing energy and food models.

Energy Generation
As energy resources become more and more tapped in our world, alternative sources of energy have become vitally important. The Center of Innovation has placed developing viable sources of renewable energy and supporting technologies at the forefront, especially those that utilize local resources such as biomass, solar, and waste.
Meanwhile, waste-to-energy conversion technology is giving Georgia communities the increased ability to turn existing organic and inorganic waste into products that can be converted into energy to power peoples’ lives. Other primary benefits include helping towns divert waste from landfills, reduce fuel costs for public and private sectors, and create jobs in a new and rapidly growing sector of the energy industry.
Energy Storage
The key to the energy ecosystem is storing generated power until it is used. With renewable energy’s move to the forefront of discussions about how to power a growing world, its future depends on the strength, quality, and longevity of energy storage technologies. The Center’s Energy Technology team brings a wealth of industry expertise to the table, works with Georgia’s universities to identify cutting-edge energy storage research, and helps companies bring new and improved technology to fruition.
For example, the future of clean energy relies on the strength and longevity of batteries, and the technology surrounding lithium-ion batteries is expected to significantly increase capacity in the next decade. As this happens, electric vehicles will become more cost-competitive with internal combustion engines and the power grid strengthened by better capturing and holding power created by wind and solar generators. Atlanta and the state rank among the top in the nation for adapting to electric vehicles, and Georgia is positioned to become a major hub for the manufacturing and use of alternative-powered vehicles.

Recycling and Sustainability
Recycling and sustainability are vital sectors in Georgia’s progressive energy ecosystem. Valuable post-consumer resources from within the state’s borders and around the country are being recycled and delivered back to the user pool instead of going to landfills. For example, Atlanta-based Nexus Fuels converts waste plastics into virgin plastics and high-grade fuels, and several other Georgia businesses are among the largest glass and aluminum recyclers in North America and beyond.
Georgia also is a leader in sustainability through organizations like Drawdown Georgia that seek to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the state and Southface Institute, which is focused on creating a regenerative economy.
